Bird Box Review

It’s been a while since I’ve read a book that I literally could not put down. Bird Box has been that book for me, it gripped me from the get go and one Sunday and it all concluded, in fact I’m kinda sad it’s over, someone please tell me there will be a follow up?!

Well if you haven’t heard about it on the grape vine heres a little about the book,

With the sinister domestic setting of GONE GIRL, the creeping chill of Hitchcock and the visceral horror and assured narrative Stephen King, BIRD BOX is an intense, terrifying debut that will change the face of genre fiction.

“Most people ignored the outrageous reports on the news. But they became too frequent, they became too real. And soon, they began happening down the street. Then the Internet died. The television and radio went silent. The phones stopped ringing. And we couldn’t look outside anymore.”

Malorie and her children are trapped indoors, hiding from an unnamed awful presence outside, wearing blindfolds in order to stay alive. If they remove them, a violent suicide will follow. Malorie has two choices – to stay in hiding, isolated, with her children, or to make the terrifying journey down river in a desperate, almost hopeless search for fellow survivors.

A claustrophobic and psychological tour-de-force set in contemporary America from debut author Josh Malerman. Michigan based Josh Malerman is frontman for the Detroit foursome The High Strung. His debut novel BIRD BOX will be published in the UK and US in April 2014.

It’s high up on my list of must reads for all you book worms out there, it isn’t a huge bulky book so at 232 pages it’s perfect for trips or holiday reads or like me, submerge yourself into the apocalyptic world and loose the day to the dark, you won’t regret it.

You can grab a copy for yourself from Amazon right now here or if you need a little more convincing check out the YouTube video here.

If you would like to win a copy of this fantastic read then simply comment below and a winner will be chosen at random on 1st May 2014!

Health and Fitness Education – Pilates Instructor Review

I was overwhelmed when I was lucky enough to be invited to take part in the HFE Pilates Instructor Blogger Challenge.

I recently took up yoga and I thoroughly enjoy it and I have been looking into taking a course so I can become a certified children’s instructor and with Pilates sharing a lot of the same ethos and techniques I was literally ready to pop.

When the student manual arrived I couldn’t wait to jump in and start reading, it’s glossy and wasn’t to daunting to open, nothing worse than a massive book to put you off starting!

I couldn’t resist having an initial flick through and was really surprised at how in-depth the manual is for a correspondence course and lack of book weight,  it covers everything from posture to workout phases and how to teach classes.

It provides all the necessary information to get yourself accredited to teach Pilates and provides you with the medical forms that you require to hand to anyone wanting to take a class, it covers all the bases and if you think you need to know it it’s defiantly in there.

I am currently deep into the posture section and I am eager to crack on through, I just hope I can remember it all!

Life generally gets in the way of all the good stuff but I plan to sit down on Sunday and make some real head way, I bought a notebook for taking notes and everything!!! It also knocks another thing off this years Resolution List, I’m doing well so far and it’s only February!!

If you are also interested in taking a Training Course in Health and Fitness I would highly recommend HFE, go check them out and what they can offer you.

Boho Beauty with Fanny Crown

I love taking part in these Blogger challenges, it gives me an opportunity to spend some time on Polyvore. It’s one of those guilty pleasures that I basically just don’t have time to indulge in on daily basis AND getting to work along side Fanny Crown and their truly stunning dresses it was a real pleasure to let my creativity take over and create a unique style for one of my favourite gowns.

I chose this cream, boho look gown. I was literally spoilt for choice and I added a good boat loads of gowns to choose from to my Polyvore account. But when I originally saw this one it took my breath away. Its simple and elegant and truly a head turner.  It’s a beautiful colour that could be worn in any situation yet has a unique look that will really bring out your personality when you wear it. It has a very classic cut, hugging the figure perfectly but it is also playful with the lace detailing to the bodice. It also brings sexy back with the stunning cut to the back of the dress  and it’s floor length to practically make you look as if you are floating. There is nothing not to love about this dress, it also nods to vintage and with some red lipstick and killer heals this dress would take on a completely new persona.

Go on, dazzle with this cute yet sophisticated boho look…

I tried to allow the dress to take centre stage with this look, no one remembers what shoes you wore but they will always remember the dress!

The cute flats and beautifully embellished and are from Oasis, comfortable, practical but beautiful!

The pearl bag by Marciano really emphasises the vintage styling to this dress yet matches beautifully.

The stacking rings add texture and playfulness to the look and unleashed your inner boho babe.

The over sized Oliver Burton watch from Topshop adds a touch of masculinity to the look, enhancing the boho vibe whilst being true to the classic look and colour of the dress.

I’d style the hair in a loose boho curl with a beautiful handmade head piece like this one from Etsy its not only boho but  vintage as well.

Make up I would keep neutral to allow all the beautiful accessories and that stunning dress make you shine, like this palette from Bobbi Brown.

Now I just wish I was getting married or attending a glamorous party to be able to take full advantage of this look.

A massive thank you goes to Fanny Crown for allowing me to take part in their Competition.

Reasons My Kid is Crying Competition and Review

If you haven’t heard of Greg Pembroke’s blog, Reason’s my Son is Crying you are missing out, it is seriously laugh a minute and as a parent you can relate with the images as you are probably witnessing one as you scroll through his blog page.
And now the good people at Boxtree have turned this internet phenomemom into a hardback book, so everyone can have a good old chortle into their tea on a rainy afternoon while the mini people are having a nap/terrorising the dog/planning an escape route/crying because its a Sunday!

Here’s a little more about it…

Greg Pembroke Published by Boxtree on 10 Oct 2013;
£9.99 hardback
It all started when busy father Greg Pembroke posted a few pictures online of his three- year-old son, mid-tantrum, alongside the reason his son was crying:
He had broken his bit of cheese in half.

Within a week the blog had featured on countless news, radio and television websites around the world, including The Daily Mail, Buzzfeed,
ABC News, Yahoo, MSN, The Huffington Post, USA Today, Good Morning America and The Today Show.
This book collects together photos sent to Greg from parents across the globe, documenting the many, completely logical reasons why small children cry. (‘I let him play on the grass’ . . . ‘We told him the pig says “oink”’ . . . ‘The neighbour’s dog isn’t outside’).
Together, they are both a fond portrait of the universal, baffling logic of toddlers – and a reminder for burned- out parents everywhere that they are not alone.

Greg Pembroke lives in Rochester, New York with his wife and two young sons. He divides his time between working as a radio advertising copywriter, and looking after his sons at home.

As a coffee table book it seriously is laugh a minute, all the images are large and bright and you cant help but chuckle along on each page for the weird reasons that toddlers suddenly have a melt down.

I suspect that many if not all of you will relate to at least one reason per page, i know i did! However don’t expect any details about the people who submitted the images or about Greg himself, apart from a few lines on the inner page, however i suspect that’s the whole point.
The book has clear ‘chapters’ under headings like ‘ Domestic Bliss’ and Sibling Rivalry’ to categorise the images into easily found areas if you just have to show you friend/mother/neighbour the funniest thing you ever did see!
All in all its a delightful book that’s a real eye opener to those that have long since forgotten what its like to share your home with a toddler or those who are yet to reach those delightful years.

Now you have the chance to WIN this book with our very own ‘Reason’s My Kid is Crying’ Comp!

Belfast nursery awarded £20,000 by Nick Jr.’s
Help Dora Help campaign
Nick Jr., Nickelodeon’s award winning pre-school channel, today announces that Hope Nursery School in Belfast will receive £20,000 funding, as they drew the greatest number of public votes in the channel’s nationwide social responsibility campaign Help Dora Help.
Help Dora Help launched in May, supported by The Prince’s Foundation for Children and the Arts. The campaign encourages pre-schoolers to learn through exploration. One in five UK nurseries/pre schools registered for a free activity pack and were invited to apply for the grant, by explaining how the nursery would benefit and designing a Dora themed backpack. Five nurseries were selected as finalists by Nick Jr.’s expert judging panel and the ultimate winner was decided by public vote.
Hope Nursery submitted a compelling case, stating their intention to use funds to enhance the landscape of their outdoor play area and build new play facilities allowing children to engage in creative, physical and imaginative play.
Julianne Fleming, Nursery Teacher at Hope Nursery School, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won this generous funding. The children, staff and parents embraced the challenge and it’s brought the community together too.  We worked hard to create a real buzz around the nursery being shortlisted and it’s obviously paid off with so many people voting for us. The money will be so well spent here and we look forward to putting our plans into action.”
Tracey Seawright, a Parent at Hope Nursery, said:  “The staff and children of Hope fully deserve the number one slot in this competition! The win has been celebrated throughout the whole community so in effect this was not just a win for Hope Nursery but a win for the Shankill, Belfast and beyond.”
Tina McCann, MD Nickelodeon UK, said: “We’re delighted that Hope Nursery have been chosen to receive the Help Dora Help award fund, they are worthy winners. From the start of the campaign our aim was to encourage pre-schoolers to explore their worlds, so in addition to making a difference to Hope Nursery, we’re also proud to have worked with so many nurseries and pre-schools across the UK to encourage a sense of adventure in pre-schoolers.”
Jeremy Newton, Chief Executive of The Prince’s Foundation for Children & the Arts said: “Hope Nursery’s bid was a very compelling and creative proposal and represented an area that will significantly benefit from the award fund.  So we are thrilled they will be able to use the funding to enhance their children’s early learning experiences and development.”

Brighten your rainy day with Diddybears

With the weather being pretty naff this last few weeks and the choice of ‘indoor’ stuff wearing thin i remembered that i had downloaded the printable for a ‘Design-a-bear’ over at Diddybears .
Under the fun and games tab at the top of the page you will find the printable with a gallery of submissions, best design has the chance of being made into a REAL bear too, how cool!!
My girls have spent hours pouring over ideas, sure we have printed out about 20 copies! but it kept them happy and most importantly QUIET!

If you haven’t already found Diddybears you are seriously missing out! They find in the palm of your hand but are completely sublime!
You can customise any bear that takes your fancy or commission your own, like i did! I ordered a pair for my husband for our wedding anniversary. The time hasn’t come to pass them over yet but they are expertly made and each one has its own personality.
Sure they aren’t toys but a beautiful girl for a new baby to grace their room or an heirloom gift to admire forever, or simply for the young at heart.
Service is absolutely fabulous and even on commission turn around is fast. I couldn’t be happier with them and i really hope my husband will feel the same.

Her new collection has just hit the shop with LOADS of new colours and designs, Moriarty has to be my favourite! Not to mention the awesomeness that is Rainbow Diddybears!!

If you haven’t you NEED to stop by even if its just for a browse, or bookmark for christmas! If you have littlies that enjoy being creative or are just a little fed up then get them on the case!

so with the launch of our new site creeping closer and closer I’ve been thinking a lot about packaging and supplying an over all LOOK of my items when posting and for selling at crafts fairs.
Ive finally decided i will be creating more season ranges instead of one off items for the new shop too as i do think i miss sales because people come back looking for an item I’ve already sold and even though the opportunity is there to have it custom made people tend to go for the easy option!
i will do a few items as one offs for trials etc to see how they sell and the custom design feature will still be available ON ALL items but i think i will find it easier to work with as well as shoppers to find what they are looking for.
Now the big thing is packaging.. I’ve tried so much already, cards, pillow boxes, jewellery boxes, pouches, organza bags.. you name it I’ve tried it but for the new shop i need to choose something and stick with it.
I have however decided that there will be a deluxe gift wrap service available where you will get a tag, card and a fancy box/bag/whatever! For craft fairs i think I’ve settled with the jewellery mounted onto branded jewellery cards inside a plastic clear bag with a business card attached, so can be passed on as it for a gift or just for yourself. But for general sales through the website i still have NO idea where to start. Needs to be practical to post, strong or sturdy so it doesn’t get damaged in the post. Ive been using little cardboard boxes wrapped in brown paper so the contents don’t get damaged but from time to time they still do even using teddy bear stuffing as a filler! I’ve also used jewellery boxes in jiffy bags so you don’t need to be home to receive your package but there was more damaged items than good ones that way!

So with that in mind i set you, my readers a challenge..
The best packaging idea will win an item of their choice
Now go… u have 1 week!!!
